The county was named after General Thomas Sumter of the Revolutionary War. The following two places in Sumter County Florida are historic landmarks: Dade Battleground Historic Memorial, and the Thomas R. Pierce House. The Dade Battlefield is also a historic state park. More than 100 soldiers were killed in battle which sparked the second Seminole War in Florida. Sumter County Florida encompasses over 600 square miles and has been a mining mecca for limestone. There are a few natural landmarks that are worth checking out such as beautiful Lake Panasoffkee.
